Exercise and Art the Key to Happiness for Jennifer

Working together, Kew Recreation Centre (KRC) and Community Recreation Outreach Program (CROP) have provided Jennifer Keating with the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream.

The dream of holding a solo art exhibition was realised when Jennifer’s artwork was showcased at KRC. Jennifer’s beautiful paintings were displayed in the KRC entrance walkway for viewing and were made available to purchase.

Jennifer has long struggled with mental and physical health issues. In her bio for the exhibition she explained, “My journey has been artistic and psychological-recovering from mental illness. Through my illness I have had a profound loss of personal identity. I’d go through patches where I would be part of group art shows but this is my first exhibition as a solo artist. It is symbolic of where I am in my recovery, that I am strong and confident in being an artist.”

Jennifer has also recently started to concentrate on improving her physical health, using exercise to manage the weight gain and diabetes caused by years of taking anti-psychotic medications.

Each week Jennifer works out at KRC with a small group of women from the CROP program. “The groups who I exercise with makes me feel like I belong and motivate me to turn up each week”.

As a long term Boroondara community member, Jennifer credits both KRC and CROP for helping her to achieve a greater sense of self confidence and social inclusion.
