BSV opens opportunity

Since late 2016 Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre (HALC) has had an ongoing partnership with Blind Sports Victoria to open up an opportunity for vision impaired members of the community to actively participate in a programmed exercise class with the supervision of a qualified instructor. Over the past 12 months, the program has grown into bigger than we would have ever thought.

Guide Dogs Victoria heard about the program and contacted us about running an exercise class for 18 vision impaired participants coming from all over Victoria. One member, in particular, made the trip down from Ballarat due to her love of physical activity and the challenges it creates physically and mentally for her. The class was an outraging success with plans for further classes in the future being discussed.

This is the biggest development in the relationship between HALC and BSV not only through the sustaining of classes with programs such as Boxing, Thai Chi, Pilates and Yoga, but also members actively participating in bike rides around Mornington and Dalesford. Through the drive and passion from our staff, this dream has turned into a reality.
