Andrew was a fit young man, keen runner and competitor in a Street Roller Hockey League - which he set up with friends as a means to stay active and be social.
In 2018 while participating in an endurance obstacle race he suffered a debilitating spinal cord injury. He deteriorated to the extent of being bedridden, losing all strength, conditioning and form from his former very fit and healthy physique.
He was determined to regain his strength and not let this devastating injury break him. After receiving professional advice, treatments and activity programing from a physiotherapist Andrew joined Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre as part of our off-peak membership offering earlier in the year (on the advice of his partner who is a regular member).
Andrew had never been a member of a gym previously and the new environment was quite daunting to him.
However, using the program provided to him by his physiotherapist as well as assistance from the HALC Health Club Team, Andrew now attends the facility five times per week and has regained confidence, strength and movement – having celebrated moments including progressing away from crutches, using the Elliptical Trainer and being able to lift impressive weights.
Andrew is incredibly levelled about his situation and is determined to return to his former ability.
We wish him all the best in his recovery and training, and are proud to be part of his journey towards a stronger self.
